Symptoms of MDS
The symptoms of MDS may be similar to symptoms of other conditions. It is important to have a doctor make a professional diagnosis. Doctors who specialize in blood diseases are called hematologists. Oncologists also sometimes diagnose and treat MDS.
MDS is not always noticeable or obvious at first. Its symptoms are usually related to having low red blood cells, a low platelet count, or a low white blood cell count.
Low red blood cell count can cause:
- fatigue and lightheadedness
- weakness
- palpitations
- dizziness
- irritability
- unusually pale skin color
- headaches
Low platelet count can cause:
- bruising
- increased bleeding (such as nose bleeds or bleeding of the gums with teeth brushing)
- rash
Low white blood cell count can cause:
- frequent infections
- mouth sores
- fevers
- lingering illnesses
If you have any of these symptoms, you should discuss them with your doctor. However, do not assume you have MDS. Most of these symptoms can be caused by other, less serious health problems.
